Looking for....

My oldest came to me a few weeks ago and told me he had heard asparagus was good. He asked me if I could fix him some so he could try it. I can vaguely remember being around canned asparagus as a child and almost barfing at the smell of it. I have had it in a few dishes at restaurants and really liked it. I know this is hard to believe but I have never fixed asparagus and wouldn't know where to start. I have searched a few places on line but haven't found anything that really jumped out at me.
If anyone has a good recipe for asparagus would you please pass it along to me? I am willing to try to make it. Just nothing with seafood. Gross. And I really don't care much for cheesy stuff either. Other than that...I am willing to try. Thanks!

Sara

Fresh asparagus can either be steamed or can be cut into smaller pieces and sauted (i.e. fried in a little butter, but that sounds kinda gross).

I saw Rachel Ray saute asparagus and then pour over a white sauce (1 Tbsp butter, 1 Tbsp flour, 1 c milk) that includes juice and zest from a tangerine. I made that once, and the best I recall, everyone liked it. Here is a similar recipe, but fancier.

girl, what's up with you not liking cheese?! ;) we would die without cheese at my house. i think anything i've ever fixed has a bag poured on top of it. ha!

i'm no help...never tried to make it. i should. we definitely need some new veggie options around here.

ok, my kids will actually eat this. Fresh asparagus, break off the end, it will break when you bend it. Lay on baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle salt, broil on low until tops start to brown...um um good!

I'm ALL ABOUT steamed asparagus with that same white sauce, only with lemon in it. (And salt.)

Mmmmmmmm.

Just don't overcook the asparagus - it should be 'al dente.'

when i make it...it's always fresh. i steam it with butter, salt, pepper, & olive oil...
vikki's method sounds like the outcome would be really similar.

it's very good...but kinda' bland, all at the same time. not something that would make you wanna gag yourself...UNLESS you over cooked it and it gets NASTY mushy! GROSS! definitely keep it firm (al dente)

Yes, I forgot to list salt -- that's almost a given.

So is a sprinkling of black pepper, at least for me.
